Balboa Park Turns 100, Part 5

With mere hours left in the year of the centennial, this is the fifth + final installment of my "Balboa Park Turns 100" series.

These photographs are from October, an incredibly warm fall Saturday when my family + I headed to Balboa Park to see the traveling exhibit Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland at the San Diego Museum of Art. Despite the heat, we began across the pedestrian bridge at the gardens and worked our way to the Cabrillo Bridge + back again.

I'll keep it short by saying, in conclusion of this series, that there is no where else on earth like Balboa Park. If you haven't been, go. If you have been, return!

A visit to the Getty Center

Last month, my sweetie and I braved the notoriously nasty I-405 in Brentwood to visit the Getty Center. In Focus: Ed Ruscha was the inspiration for the trip and it didn't disappoint. Photographers love the architecture of the Getty and flock to it, so it seemed necessary for me to take along a couple cameras of my own.

I was quite happy to stumble upon a painting of Edvard Munch's in the museum's collection. It was a work of his that I was not familiar with previously, which made it that much more exciting.

I couldn't leave without adding a couple of postcards to my collection. The first is of a wonderful panoramic film photograph of the Center taken by John C. Lewis in 2000. The second is a painting by Belgian artist Fernand Knopff entitled "Jeanne Kefer, 1885", which was my absolute favorite piece of art in the museum.

I purchased a couple postcards for friends as well and wrote them from the museum cafe's seating area that overlooks the gardens. Sending postcards to friends is something I try to do whenever I have the opportunity to visit somewhere special, and I cherish the ones I receive myself.

half-frame hoarding

Recently, with the amount of attention downtown's Cecil Hotel has been getting, I went back into my archives to try and find the one picture I had taken of the Cecil a year or two ago. I looked through several rolls and came up empty handed. What I realized while looking is that I had hoarded a surprising number of photographs. Filed them away and didn't think twice about them. I just couldn't believe it! The following photographs are, as my memory serves, only now getting their due. Each taken with my Olympus half-frame camera, all during the fall of 2011. Enjoy.
